Summer in the garden – a good health treat!

summer_blog1Summer is on the way, and thank goodness for that. I can’t wait for quiet sunday afternoons in the garden, that is until the neighbour decides to cut the grass or trim the trees, but anyway, summer afternoons in the garden are so good for your health, both mental and physical, and we need to make the most of the time available.

Children love to be in the garden too, as do older people, but we probably need to make the garden safe and take care of some maintenance before those warm days really arrive. I decided to do just that, and called in my local handyman to take care of the outdoor jobs that I just couldn’t do.

I made a list of the things that needed taking care of in my garden, in the hope that it prompts you to do the same, or at least reminds you that there are chores to be taken care of before barbecue season gets under way.

There are things that properties owners can do to their properties to prepare their garden for the summer. If you are lookint to sell you house, proper preparations make your garden more beautiful and more attractive to potential buyers as well as tenants, especially if the property is presentable inside. Getting your garden ready for summer is one of the most cost effective methods of improving the overall appearance of your property. The following is a close look at some property maintenance tips that will definitely prepare your garden for summer.

Take care of your lawn:
Having a neatly mown grass is a sure way of making your summer great. Ensure your lawn is in top condition by working on it even before summer begins. Re-sown all poor patches, aerate it to enhance root growth and weed your bed. Rip out the stems of the weeds so as to weed them individually. This will eliminate the weeds and prevent them from spreading. Ensure the grass is at least 1 cm tall after mowing because cutting it too short will give your lawn a less healthy look. Remember to set up a watering schedule to enhance root development. This helps your plants withstand dry summer spells.

Banish all weeds:
Although keeping weeds at bay in your garden may seem like a never-ending task, you can boost your efforts by weeding your beds just before the beginning of summer. It is the right time because seedlings of invasive weedy plants begin getting established at the start of the summer. Subsequently, weeding your lawn at this time will make your summer care easier because only few invasive seedlings will be established.

Clear the shed:
It is normal to stockpile items in your shed over the long winter. This may result to a chaotic mess which must be organized to bring sanity in your shed. To organize the shed, remove all items from the shed and sort them into two groups. One group should only include items that you need and the other for items that you don’t need. Give or throw away items that you no longer need as well those you need, but they are in excess. Clean the shed and place the remaining in an organized manner.bigstock-Smiling-woman-autumn-gardening-50895815-620x300

You will have little work if you had stored your barbecue because spring dusting and cleaning is sufficient. However, if you have masonry barbecue, you may need to remove rust that has accumulated in wet conditions. In case of garden furniture, be sure to use a specific wooden cleaner with a brush to clean and leave the furniture to dry before applying a wood stain and protector.

Plantar Fasciitis – What a Pain!

I know this sounds strange, but myself and 2 of my friends all aquired plantar fasciitis within about 3 months of each other. It’s horrible, my sister has had it too, and if you get it, and I hope you don’t, you mention it to friends and suddenly find that everyone has had it at some time or other.

It is generally worse when you have been resting, such as first thing in the morning, or when you get up from sitting, and the pain in your heel and foot can be really bad. There is no real cure, some exercises help, as you can see in the video below, but it seems that eventually it just goes away again. Very strange. I hope mine goes away soon, and I have been following the recommended exercises. I am installing a home gym in my house, so I do have a good place to go and work the appropriate muscles.

I will keep you posted!

Water Heating With A Wood Burning Stove

f474949dc9a95233447edd056f1fbb50The whole alternative movement is based around finding alternative and therefore more environmentally friendly ways of doing things, ways that the established order wants us to forget about, such as the drug companies and utility companies.

I have always been interested getting off grid, not something I intend doing yet, but one day maybe, who knows, so for that reason I am often looking at alternative ways to heat and cool our home.

Log burning stoves have had quite a resurgence in recent years, and the new technology allows you to burn a higher percentage of the fuel, and make use of a higher percentage of the heat by installing heat exchangers etc.

I know that followers of this blog have an interest in alternative heating methods too, so I thought I would share my recent research here.

There is a whole new field where a wood burning stove can be utilized that most individuals frankly know very little about. This is, without doubt, the wood fired hot water boilers or furnaces, which are otherwise known as outdoor wood fired hydronic heaters (OWHH). Most of these ingenious products are designed for the primary purpose of heating up residential homes and even some commercial buildings.

Indeed hot water heating systems trace their first origins to more than 2,000 years ago to the Roman empire. Romans utilized them to heat their famous public baths and in some cases, private villas. This was simply brought about by making hot water to flow through clay pipes, which were then routed over wood burning furnaces.

At the same time, heating up homes, schools and even commercial buildings with water boilers happens to be one of the oldest heating system designs on a global scale. They are most practical way of heating up multiple rooms, that have varying temperature setups as well as heating loads simultaneously.

Hydronic heating system versus a forced air heating system

A wood burning stove heating system naturally presents a couple of important benefits when contrasted with a forced air heating system. To begin with, diminutive pipes which carry water and connected to diminutive circulation pipes can be able to supply the same amount of heat to multiple areas. As would a huge forced air system with air ducts and supply fans.

Secondly the addition of a wall thermostat on to a diminutive control valve to the first system will ensure that each room can have its very own heating control independent of the others. This is definitely something that would be extremely hard to bring about with a single zonal central air heating system.heating coil

What are the types of wood burning stove water heating systems available in the market?

A wood burning stove heating systems options are highly noted for being very versatile. This is simply because you can still maintain your pre-existing gas or oil boilers, and utilize it as the primary or backup source of heat for your home as you see best. There are now also freestanding wood fired stoves, which come with all the necessary controls and valves, already pre-installed in a single weather-tight enclosure.

Such a water heating system can be situated adjacent to your home, and it will utilize pliable and insulated, buried pipes to supply and retain hot water to your heating system. This kind of a wood fired stove is in an excellent position of burning a wide variety of wood products. This includes old shipping pallets, wood pellets, corn and even coal.

Most of these products come fitted with automatic combustion air controls, and will only need a single refill once each day. In the event you decide to make use of pellet wood or coal, you can have an automatic feed mechanism fitted on the stove.

On the other hand, in a new house construction scenario, you can decide to purchase a wood burning stove water boiler that has a second burner. This allows you to use gas or oil whenever you see fit. There are also hot water coils, which are specifically designed to work with a traditional freestanding wood stove. While there are also hydronic water jackets, which are designed to work with a traditional masonry fireplace.

This type of heating technology uses a sustainable fuel source, and the technology is evolving every year. I intend to buy some kind of log burning heater in the next 12 months, so anyone interested can contact me from my contact form on this website and we can exchange ideas and information.

In the video below you can see an unconventional but effective way to capture heat which you can turn into hot water, basically free hot water. I like the sound of that!

Foods that fight allergies

So it is hay fever season again, and my son is starting to suffer. It’s always the same time of year, so probably grass or tree pollen, and it gives him a hard time.

One of the things that we have found helps is to take locally produced honey. He takes it on toast, which is really nice, and it does help to reduce the discomfort.

While doing some research into seasonal allergies I found the following infographic, which I thought was useful and may well help others, so here it is.

Upgrade your kitchen for less – and help the environment

new work area cupboardsThis is a little unexpected, me writing about installing a new kitchen, but I think that when I use a company that I have been pleased with, and if they are offering some kind of benefit other than just the service they provide, then it can be of benefit to readers of this blog.

I needed a new work area in my clinic, but I didn’t want to spend a lot of money, and I wanted to try and think green and help the environment in the process. After doing some research, I found that a low cost alternative would be to just keep the main kitchen cabinets, because they were good anyway, but just changed my scratched and beat up doors. Keeping the cabinets is kind of recycling, so good for the planet, and the cost savings were considerable. I changed my old worn out worktops too, and now have a work area that I can be proud of for a lot less money than I thought I was going to spend.

So surprisingly, you can give your kitchen a new look by only replacing your old cupboard doors with new kitchen cupboard doors. Whether it’s because they are worn-out or you have outgrown them and you want a new style in your kitchen. Replacing the doors will save you the cost of remodeling since you will only have to replace the cupboard door and keep your existing cupboard. Once you have made your decision that you want to replace your cupboard doors, the next step is for you to decide on which doors you want. There are varieties of doors you can choose from depending on the type of your cupboard.

Stock doors

These are ready made doors, they are cheap and affordable. Since they are ready made you may be limited to shape, style, wood type and color. They always come attached to the cupboard.

Semi-custom doors

With this kind of door, you have the option of certain dimensions like resizing. You can purchase them for a replacement on your kitchen cupboard. The advantage of this type of door is that they are cost effective.

Custom doors

They are build according to your specification for example color, size, design and material. They are a bit expensive compared to other type of cupboard doors. Installation is also somehow complicated and labor intense. They are built on a built to order basis. Due to their design, they are more attractive compared to other doors.

Replacing the cupboard doors involves the task of taking off the face of the frames and the existing doors but retaining the cupboard boxes where they are. You need to put on the new doors and the face frames with the same hardware. New hardware can also bring a dramatic new appearance so you should also consider changing your handles and drawer pull.

The next step is to ensure the cupboard boxes matches with the new door. To do so you need to paint or reface the boxes for consistent look.

You should also consider the style, a popular style is a panel cupboard door which has a raised center panel that is surrounded by a contour, generally known as a shaker door.

Use a flat glossy cupboard door in contemporary designs. It’s smooth and without contours or panels. There are also accent doors and they are mainly used for decoration and are not used as a design style for all the cupboards in the kitchen. Accent doors vary in design and material used, they can be sheet metal, mullion or glass. They reinforce an existing design and also add a little style in your kitchen.

Give your kitchen a new style with new kitchen cupboard doors and you will love the appearance of your kitchen. Instead of replacing the whole cupboard, what you need to do is just install new doors and your kitchen will look new. You should carefully chose the kind of door to purchase depending on your cupboard size.

Do not be bothered by the color of the door since after replacement, you can paint the cupboard to have the same color with the new door. Before purchasing the new door, ensure that you have the correct measurement of the cupboard door size to prevent frustration of buying smaller or bigger door that will not fit in your cupboard.

Replacing the doors on any kitchen is an affordable alternative to a complete refit, and I have already recommended it to my friends and customers. I hope you will check it out too when you need a kitchen upgrade.

dental braces

It seems that many of the online forums have questions about teeth straightening and braces. My daughter is at that stage right now and it’s a subject that I am familiar with, so I thought it might be a good idea to cover some of the pro’s and con’s here.

This is just my take on the subject, you should always seek the advice of a professional orthodontist or two before you make your decision.

Orthodontic treatments that use either braces or Invisalign are just few of the lots of techniques used by dental experts in correcting the teeth of their patients. They straighten teeth to offer them a perfect position, enhance their look, and promote appropriate function.

Invisalign uses a set of clear plastic trays as a means of attaining the position. Traditional braces, on the other hand, usually make use of metal wires with a goal of getting the most ideal movement or position for the teeth.

The good idea about orthodontic dental treatments that utilize braces or Invisalign is that they do more than just align the teeth. These are also valuable in remedying bite problems that frequently need unique medical diagnosis and treatment.

The Advantages of traditional dental braces.
Dental braces usually utilise several brackets that are attached to a wire. Your orthodontist will fix the brackets to your teeth, and the wire will apply pressure in the appropriate direction, thus straightening the teeth over time.

Dental braces can fix even the most complex concerns in aligning the teeth. The braces are not only esthetically pleasing, however practical. These are useful in closing spaces and remedying crooked teeth.

Traditional braces are much better for complicated cases
These types of braces are basically a plastic or metal bracket that are attached onto the front of each tooth. One benefit of dental braces over Invisalign is that these are not removable.

Unlike an Invisalign treatment which is incredibly useful for esthetic functions and easy dental concerns, braces are functional and work efficiently for taking care of complex tooth problems. Braces can likewise be expected to work faster at closing gaps and aligning the teeth than Invisalign.

According to clients, braces work in moving misaligned teeth within a fairly short duration. Dental braces are likewise helpful in correcting malocclusion (crooked or crowded teeth) and bad bites.

The Advantages of Invisalign
Using Invisalign is an effective method for tooth movements that are not too complex. A set of clear, computer-generated trays is preferably used 24 hours a day with change-outs every two weeks. There are certain trays that can last for six months to one year.

Nevertheless, these require some type of retention to prevent the teeth from moving back. Among its best advantages is that the trays are reasonably invisible. For this reason the name Invisalign.

Some individuals just do not want any individual to know they are using braces They also provide assistance for individuals who wish to acquire straight teeth while still feeling comfy in social situations. Putting on Invisalign offers comfort since it does not influence your speech.

Invisalign treatment can be anticipated to work more effectively for esthetic functions rather than for the function of enhancing the capability of the teeth. This is why lots of people, specifically those who have complicated dental problems, still choose dental braces.

If the client’s bite is abnormal, then the application of braces can highlight his/her finest smile. The immediate correction of this problem can enhance the patient’s smile while also increasing his or her oral health.

This is useful since being not able to remedy an unusual bite, or other dental problems that are treatable making use of braces, can cause oral illness. This proves the usefulness of dental braces in treating numerous dental issues.

Are old style braces much better than Invisalign? Eventually it’s going to boil down to figuring out the specific need in each case and deciding which will certainly fulfill that requirement in the best way for you the patient.

Orthodontic treatments that utilize either braces or Invisalign are just few of the numerous strategies made use of by dental experts in correcting the teeth of their clients. Conventional braces, on the other hand, generally make use of metal wires with an aim of getting the most ideal movement or position for the teeth.

An orthodontist or other skilled dental specialist is responsible for affixing the dental braces onto the teeth. Dental braces can remedy even the most complicated problems in aligning the teeth. Dental braces are also helpful in remedying malocclusion (uneven or crowded teeth) and bad bites.

A more problematic condition could be Plantar Fasciitis. It is a recurring problem, which I have suffered from, as has many of my friends. It seems to affect people that are standing all day at work, and results in a very sore heel. Often called first step syndrome, as it hurts the most when taking the first step after a rest, or after a night in bed.
